Calavai vs Cal.com: open-source flexibility vs payment-first booking

Last updated 2026-05-08 · 7 min read

Cal.com is the open-source booking tool that's become a real Calendly alternative — extensible, self-hostable, generous free tier, deep integration ecosystem. Calavai is narrower: built specifically around required prepayment for 1:1 paid sessions. Both are excellent at what they do; they're just optimizing for different things.

Disclosure: this is the Calavai blog. We use Cal.com ourselves for free internal scheduling and we recommend it openly. The question isn't which is “better” — it's which fits your specific use case.

The fundamental difference

  • Cal.com optimizes for scheduling flexibility: free tier, infinite event types, round-robin, team scheduling, integrations with everything (Zoom, Notion, Salesforce, etc). Payment is a paid add-on.
  • Calavai optimizes for payment-first booking: every booking goes through Stripe checkout before the slot exists. Scheduling depth is lighter.

Pricing reality

  • Cal.com Free: unlimited event types, calendar sync, basic integrations. No payments.
  • Cal.com Teams ($12/seat/mo): adds team scheduling, round-robin, advanced workflows, payments via Stripe app.
  • Cal.com Enterprise ($custom): SAML, dedicated support.
  • Calavai: $0/mo, 5% per paid booking. Stripe Connect baked in by default.

For solo paid 1:1 work: Cal.com Teams at $12/mo + Stripe app + your time wiring it up vs Calavai at 0/mo + 5% per booking. Below ~7 sessions/mo Calavai costs less. Above that, Cal.com's flat fee wins economically.

Where Cal.com clearly wins

  • Free, unlimited event types for non-paid scheduling (sales calls, intro meetings, internal team scheduling).
  • Open source + self-hostable if you care about data ownership / vendor lock-in.
  • Round-robin and team scheduling for sales orgs and consultancies with multiple bookers.
  • Massive integration ecosystem: Zoom, Notion, Salesforce, HubSpot, Linear, Jitsi, Tandem.
  • Workflow automations: send custom reminders, post-booking SMS, conditional logic.
  • Routing forms: qualify leads before they pick a slot.
  • Embed-anywhere: well-supported iframe + API for putting the picker on any site.

Where Calavai wins

  • Payment is enforced by default, not a Teams-tier add-on. No upsell wall to make money matter.
  • Packages and subscriptions are native, not a bolt-on. Cal.com supports paid bookings but not multi-session packs out of the box.
  • Cancellation policy + refund% is built in: configure once, applied automatically. In Cal.com you'd roll this with workflows + manual Stripe refunds.
  • Service-locked schedules: e.g. “Wednesdays at 7 PM weekly” for a fixed course; clients can only book/reschedule into your set times.
  • Public profile page at calavai.com/{username} with your services, prices, schedule. No site-builder or embed needed.
  • Pay-per-success pricing means $0 fixed cost to test the channel.

Bottom line

Cal.com is a brilliant scheduling platform that does payments. Calavai is a payment platform that does scheduling. If your scheduling complexity is the bottleneck, Cal.com is the right call. If your money-collection workflow is the bottleneck, Calavai is the right call. Both are honest answers and there's no shame in stitching them together (Calavai for paid 1:1; Cal.com for free intro calls).
